📰 The Black Maternal Health Crisis

The heart-breaking loss of Olympic athlete Torie Bowie in May 2023 brought media attention to the issue of race inequality in maternal healthcare, but this isn’t a new issue. Maternal mortality rates in the US have more than doubled in the last 20 years, and the racial inequality statistics are alarming. But finally, change-makers seem to be advocating for Black mothers. The Congressional Momnibus Act aims to address “every clinical and non-clinical” factor leading to the crisis. FDA approval of testing for preeclampsia is also big news — preeclampsia disproportionately affects Black women and is one of the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths in the US, so early detection is definitely a win.

💊 The FDA Has Been Busy

The first over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill, Opill, has been approved by the FDA in the US, a step in the right direction for making birth control accessible and affordable for all. The price is still TBC, but it will be available in early 2024, with “no age restrictions on sales”. Each year, nearly half of all pregnancies in the US are unintended, so more accessible birth control is big news.

👩‍🎤 The Memoir We’ve All Been Waiting For

Mark your calendars. After over a decade under conservatorship and “a lot of therapy”, Britney’s releasing her memoir, The Woman in Me, on October 24 this year — a story of “freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope”. Brit’s setting the record straight, and we’re here for it.

🎀 It’s Barbie’s World, We’re Just Living In It

After what felt like centuries of trailers, interviews, and PR campaigns, the Barbie movie is FINALLY in cinemas (and breaking serious records). We knew it would be our top pick of 2023 (just take a look at our color scheme 👀) but it’s so much more than that. It's a fiercely self-aware masterpiece that throws (glittery) shade while offering a nuanced commentary on what it means to be a woman. We love you, Greta!

Welcome to Ask The Expert, where we pose your most-asked questions and intrusive thoughts to a real-life professional, to save you the hassle.

This month, we’re chatting to love educator and relationship intelligence expert Railey Molinario, about all things intimacy.

Q: Our energy is barely there, and I’m touched out from daily life with small children, how can we bring the intimacy back?

Rekindling intimacy while navigating the exhaustion of parenting can be challenging. Start by openly communicating your feelings with your partner and showing empathy towards yourselves as a couple. Prioritize quality time, even if short-lived, and cherish the smallest physical gestures that convey love and care. Share the load of parenting and household tasks to alleviate the burdens. And don't hesitate to seek out professional support if you need it—there's no shame in asking for help. Remember, the little emotional connections can significantly bring back the intimacy you both deserve. Be patient and kind to yourselves.

Q: I have a very low sex drive but crave connection, help!

Intimacy is a multi-faceted experience that includes physical, emotional, sexual, spiritual, and intellectual aspects; it goes far beyond sex. To strengthen emotional connections with your partner, prioritize open communication, quality time, and active listening. Non-sexual touch, such as massage and cuddling, fosters deep emotional bonds. Embracing vulnerability and sharing thoughts, dreams, and fears further enhances emotional intimacy. Remember, intimacy isn't solely about sex—non-sexual connections are equally crucial for nurturing a strong and meaningful relationship. Embracing all dimensions of intimacy can help cultivate a fulfilling and profound connection with your partner while boosting your libido.

Q: I feel so insecure in my body lately, how can I boost my sexual confidence?

Sexual confidence thrives on deep connection, not simply performance or what you look like. Embrace self-compassion and focus on body positivity rather than flaws. Shift to experiencing pleasure, leading to more fulfilling moments. Remember, sexual confidence develops gradually through mutual pleasure, embracing your uniqueness, and cherishing intimate connections with your partner. Prioritize pleasure, not pressure, and nurture a positive mindset for satisfying sexual experiences. Healthy activities like exercise and mindful eating can also contribute to a well-rounded sense of self and improved sexual confidence.

The monthly mantra our team is living by…

At The Leak, we’re loving ourselves this summer, so here are some of the ladies’ self-care faves:

Phoebe 🧡 SPF and convincing herself that this will be the year she wears it all year round. “I absolutely love this Beauty of Joseon one, It doesn’t break me out (even when I’m hormonal) and I am shipping it hard rn.”

Keshia 💛 moreish meals with minimal effort. "I'm obsessed with @natsnourishments TikTok series on easy meals from an exhausted personal chef - which is basically all moms. Drool over her braised Cannellini beans recipe here. Or, you know, cook it."

Tassia 💚 ankle socks that don’t get swallowed by your sneakers. “I bagged some bargains on Prime Day, and these padded, no-roll running socks are my fave by a long shot. Full day of running (or walking) in my New Balances? Bring it on.”

The ways we're distracting ourselves from daily life this month..

🍿 Keeping it (really) real with The Kardashians

This season has equal parts high-fashion and real talk about surgery, surrogacy and sibling rivalry.

📚 Mentally stable girl summer > Hot girl summer

This summer we're working on our mental health, not our tan — we've already plugged SPF, now it's all about Atomic Habits by James Clear.

🎧 Come on Barbie, let’s go party

We curated 8 eclectic hours of iconic bops to free our inner Barbie. You’re welcome.
